Both staff and students seem to be settling in and learning the expectations and routines for the new school year. It's hard to believe that we have a only been in school a few short weeks. These early days of school are often fast, paced and leave both staff and students leaving he building feeling exhausted. I appreciate that we have slowly been able to ease ourselves back into the school year routine by having short weeks. Next week will be our first five day week of school.
The month of September means that math and reading assessments are underway in order to develop a baseline for academic progress. This year we will be using Acaidence in addition to STAR reading to help us track literacy progress and identify areas to target for instruction and intervention. Other assessments include STAR math, PNOA, ENOA and POA. Students in grades 3-5 participated in the VTCAP in the spring and Westshire third and fourth grade families will receive their results by the end of next week.
Rivendell School District understands the importance of professional development for it's staff and I appreciate that each Thursday time is set aside for collaborative professional development to occur. Over the last two Thursdays, Samuel Morey and Westshire staff have joined together to discuss Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and how we plan to re-envision of MTSS here at RISD. Our hope to create a shared knowledge and approach for all elementary students in regards to MTSS.
I've excited to see what the coming weeks bring here at Westshire!

Vermont school emergency safety drills are required by law under Act 29 of 2023. Schools make every attempt for these drills to be trauma informed and age appropriate. Staff will review drill steps, expectations and practices with student prior to the drill. The state requires ten emergency drills per year, which include egress, relocation, bus evacuation and options based drills. |

 | Kaity Weber | Mrs. Weber comes to us from Kurin Hattin and Springfield, Vermont Schools. She's excited to return to her roots, as she is a Thetford Academy graduate. Kaity is especially excited to spend time on her family's land with her young son. Mrs. Weber will be learning and growing with the first grade class this year. |
 | Ethan Michaels | Mr. Michaels comes to us from the First Branch Unified District. Most recently he taught first grade at Tunbridge Central School. Ethan attended Hartford schools and still lives in the Upper Valley. He's excited to share his interest in the outdoors and science with his students. |
 | Jasmine Tremblay | Mrs. Tremblay comes to us from OESU most recently teaching students at Thetford Elementary School. Jasmine is a very passionate teacher with over twenty years of experience. Mrs. Tremblay enjoys making her classroom space a warm, welcoming and safe place for students and staff. |

Hello: My name is Damaris Tyler, and I’ve been teaching violin in public schools for many years. I am offering after-school small-group classes for students interested in exploring this wonderful instrument, and am in the process of visiting all the music classes to introduce myself. With the Suzuki method of instruction this is a very accessible instrument to young children. We learn rhythm patterns, a structured sequence of songs, and group/ensemble cooperation. WEEKLY LESSONS are held at the school. HOW IT WORKS: This is a parent-sponsored program, with monthly fees of $45. Violins are available for rental from Ellis Music in Bethel, usually about $25./month. Ellis Music sends a representative to the school every week; they bring the instruments - an exciting moment - and if any repair or service is needed, they provide a loaner instrument. Violin rentals are also available from Vermont Violins in West Lebanon at the Powerhouse Mall; rental prices are similar, but you will need to pick up the Instrument and take it in for any needed work. ellismusic.com vermontviolins.com You can rent your child’s violin online. Most beginners will need either a ¼-size or ½’-size, to be determined by arm length. I love introducing children to the violin! The minimum rental period is two months, and if after that your child does not wish to continue, the instrument may be returned with no penalty. Of course, I will do my best to intrigue them into a longer relationship with music! Some scholarship help is available. Please reach out about this.

- Preschool parents may park in the circle to the front of the school for pick up after school. Please don't part here if you are not a preschool parent.
- If students aren't picked up by 3:15 and 2:15 (Thursdays) they will be returned to the gym and will be dismissed with the students that ride the bus.

Westshire Elementary is proud to be submitting carrots, butternut squash, and our tallest sunflower from our school garden to Tunbridge Fair Garden Exhibition in the Juniors Division! The 4th and 5th graders picked the butternut squash, and the kindergarteners picked the carrots. We hope to take home two blue ribbons this year! This is the best time of year for procuring local foods from our farms for our school lunch program. We have sourced from Root 5 Farm, Crossroads Farm, 4 Corner’s Farm, and our school gardens. Some of the local items we have had are strawberries, raspberries, melon, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers! The kids are eating it up! I’ll send photo of kindergarteners harvesting carrots. They are going to harvest them this afternoon. Katie Cole |

We will be continuing the tradition of attending the Tunbridge Fair on Thursday September 17th for educational agriculture day..
- Chaperones meet in the school gym at 8:10am
- Buses will be leaving the school at 8:30am
- Buses will be returning to the school 12:45pm
- If you intend to pick your child up from the fair please be at the hill behind the school house on Antiques hill promptly at 12:30. Any student not picked up on time will returned to school on the bus. We will not wait.
- It is a normal Thursday dismissal time of 2:00pm
